Update on City of Corpus Christi Groundwater Project – Western Well Field

Groundwater development continues across Nueces County as part of the City of Corpus Christi’s ongoing Groundwater Supply Project. According to publicly available data and project reports, drilling and testing have progressed on the western well field, located near Bluntzer, Texas.

Current Western Field Status

  • Well No. 9: Drilling complete; pump design currently underway.

  • Well No. 10: Drilling complete; testing and water sampling ongoing.

  • Well No. 11: Drilling operations continue.

  • Water line and river outfall: Design phase in progress.

  • Data analysis: Ongoing in support of a potential Bed and Banks permit application through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

These activities represent continued field development following earlier work on the City’s Nueces River Groundwater Wells Project, which includes both eastern and western well fields.

Expenditures Reported

  • Eastern Well Field: $15,587,816

  • Western Well Field: $2,408,669

Figures reflect publicly reported project expenditures to date and are subject to change as design and construction advance.

Sustainable Pumping and Project Capacity

According to hydrogeologic modeling conducted by Intera, Inc., sustainable groundwater production estimates for the two primary well fields are as follows:

  • Eastern Well Field: 11 million gallons per day (MGD)

  • Western Well Field: 17 million gallons per day (MGD)

These combined volumes align with the City’s previously published potential volume of up to 43 MGD across both well fields.
These figures represent modeled or projected capacities used for planning purposes, not current production levels.

About the Project

The City of Corpus Christi Groundwater Project is designed to evaluate the feasibility of developing local aquifer resources as part of a broader regional water supply strategy.
Ongoing work in the eastern and western fields includes test drilling, aquifer performance assessments, and coordination with state agencies to ensure that data collected supports sustainable groundwater management under Texas water law.

The Nueces Groundwater Conservation District (NGCD) provides this information to keep residents and landowners informed about regional groundwater activity. The NGCD does not endorse or oppose individual projects; its role is to promote public transparency, conservation, and responsible resource management in accordance with Chapter 36 of the Texas Water Code.
